For some reason, I started thinking about all the ways I've learned to curse, swear and otherwise be vulgar over the years. While my preferred language to spout vulgarities in is English, I've learned some choice phrases in a few others as well (notably in Slovenian - since that's my second language).

We've all heard George Carlin talk about the Seven Dirty Words. We've seen the emails about how @!$%# is the world's most versitile word. We've even heard the Merovingian wax philosophic about cursing:

" I have sampled every language, French is my favourite - fantastic language, especially to curse with. Nom de Dieu de putain de bordel de merde de saloperies de connards d'enculé de ta mère. It's like wiping your ass with silk, I love it."

We all (should) know how to curse relatively well in English, but what about other languages? I find it's useful to have a couple of foreign-language vulgarities on hand for use in a pinch (say, if the kids are close at hand, or if you want to curse while making someone think you're complementing them).

So, I thought I'd share some of my favorites in a list of Vulgarities that are my personal favorites. I'm providing both the vulgarity in it's native language, a translation, and a guide to usage and pronunciation.

Beware! Innocent or Easily Offended Eyes Need Not Read Further

English - Yes, English

Penis Wrinkle - (PEE-nis RINK-le) - Self Explanatory
Bollocks - (BAWL-ocks) - "Testicles"
Bugger - (BUG-gur) - Syn. for @!$%# as in "Bugger Off", interchangeable with "Sod" and "Toss" et al.
Bloody - (BLUD-ee) - Bloody – use as an intensifier as in "Bloody Hell", interchangeable with "Ruddy", "Bleeding", et al.

French

Merde - (MARE-duh) - @!$%#.
Sacrébleu - (SAHK-rey-BLUH) - Holy Blue. Interchangeable with:
Sacrédieu (Holy God). About the same as "Gosh Darn It."
Fous le Camp! - (FOO ley KAHMP) - @!$%# Off! (more like Scram)
Allez vous faire foutre! - (AH-lay voo fair FOO-truh) - @!$%# Off! (more like @!$%# Off!)

(And remember to roll your "R"s in the back of your throat!)

German

Fich Dich - (FEE-h DEE-h) - @!$%# You.
Schwanz - (sh-VAHNz) - Dick
Scheize - (sh-EYE-zuh) - @!$%#
Schweinehund - (sh-VINE-e-hoond) - Bastard, Son of a Bitch

Slovenian

(Note: many of these are similar to other Slavic vulgarities. Some of these may actually be Serbian…not entirely sure)

This language is my personal favorite foreign language

Jebemti Matr - (yeh-BEM-tee MAT-ur) - I @!$%# Your Mother – A more polite "minced oath" would be Jebela Cesta (ye-BEL-ah TSES-ta) "It's a White Street"
Jebote Šinter - (YEH-boh-teh SHIN-tur) - Get @!$%#ed by a Dog Catcher
Jebote pas otac i matr - (YEH-boh-teh Pahs O-tats ee MAT-ur) - "@!$%# your dog, father and mother" (alternatively, "Your dog @!$%#s your mother and father") (the O sounds like the "o" in or)
Jebemti Bogora - (YEH-bem-ti BOG-or-ah) - @!$%# your God
Jebiga - (YEH-bee-gah) - @!$%# it.
Pičkati čorava - (PEECH-ka-ti CHOR-ahv-ah) - Blind pussy. Similar to "God Dammit" in usage.
Idi v Pička - (EE-dee uv PEECH-ka) - Literally: Go crawl back inside your mother's pussy. More like: Go to Hell
Idi v Pizda - (EE-dee uv PEEZ-dah) - Same as above.
Pičkati matr - (PEECH-ka mo MAT-ur) - Literally: Your Mother's Pussy (also "Pizdati Matr)
Kurac - (KOO-rahts) - Dick.
Ne me res pizdi - (neh meh rez PEEZ-di) - Don't @!$%# with me. Don't piss me off. Cut it out. (it's impolite, but not necessarily "really" vulgar

Hungarian

(Sometimes these appear in Slovenian as well)

Jebo je ježa - (YEH-boh yeh YEH-zhah) - (zh sounds like the G in Baton Rouge) "He @!$%#s a Hedgehog"
Jebat cu ti sunce - (YEH-baht tsu tee SOON-tseh) I'll @!$%# your Sun. (not Son, but Sun) – Along the lines of "I'll @!$%# your world"

Now it's your turn…I'd love to hear some of your more obscure ones!

More shortly (since this ISN'T what I was SUPPOSED to write today)

-E.G.

Yes - it's crude, and yes - it's got cursing in it...(and no, it's not on today's topic of "Pen & Paper vs. Keyboard & Mouse") - but I just couldn't resist...

"Allez vous faire foutre" and "vas faire foutre" are better translated to "go f yourself" versus "f you".

I like "vas chier" which is "go sh*t"

"suce ma graine" which is "suck my ___" the literal translation would be suck my seed.

and "besoin de lui/elle/ca comme un bouton sur mon fece" which is "I need him/her/this like I need a pimple on my ass".

The literal translation would be "go f elsewhere". There really isnt a clear translation for "f you".

In Quebec a "crosseur" would be close , as it sort of means F'r. but also has the intonation that the person is also dishonest.

I always find it funny when "vous" is used versus "tu" as vous is used to show respect.

Allez vous faire foutre is almost a polite way of saying it. Versus vas faire foutre.

French swearing is very interesting , especially in Quebec as alot of swear words are words from the Church. Tabernack, colis etc. Tabernacle, chalice.

I've studied Spanish for over 10 years... how much time to do you have for the swear words I know?! =)

On a related note, Expletive Deleted, by Ruth Wajnryb, is a fantastic look at swearing from a linguistic perspective. I loved it.

Thanks for the laugh!

You're probably right, Ebeneezer. What I heard may be a dialect (Italian is loaded with dialects) and also, as I said, I'm spelling it phonetically, the way it sounded to my young ears :-0

I spent four years in Spanish class then one month in Spain as a teenager. After the month in Spain all I could ever remember was the curse words I learned while over there. Now I'm starting over with Spanish and trying to forget: ir al infierno, perderse, and joden (interpretations vary based on who you ask).

I used to work building and testing servers with a guy who spoke 8 languages. He would swear at the machines in all of them randomly, sometimes switching mid-curse. I think the staccato-sounding Italian ones were the best.

Great article ... LOL !!

This reminds me...

Sometimes it's not the language, it's how you say it!

My mom once told me how she and her best friend used to get a kick out of saying "F U" to guys pestering them when they went out without the guy ever noticing. For example, say the guy bought them a drink or payed one of them a compliment but they weren't interested.... One or the other would say to the guy, "@!$%# you very much!" only the "@!$%#" would be very subdued, so the guy usually thought they were actually thanking him!
